Wondering about What is IVF and how it is done? Here you go!

What is IVF?

IVF in vitro fertilization is an artificial process of conception. The baby born through IVF procedure is also called a test-tube baby. This technique has been developed for women, who are unable to conceive due to any reason. This is the reason that the IVF center in Lucknow is continuously opening up and people are taking advantage of this process.

During this process, the eggs are removed from the woman’s ovaries and fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. Then it forms a fetus and later this embryo is inserted into the woman’s uterus. If there is any problem in the egg or sperm and there is any problem in the process of fertilization, the process can be completed by using the sperm or egg of another donor with the prior consent of a couple.

How is IVF done?

Stopping menstruation: The first phase of the IVF process will be to stop a woman’s menstruation. For this, the doctor will first give medicine to the woman, which will stop her menstrual cycle. This medicine can be given as an injection or as a nasal spray. The woman may have to take this medicine for about two weeks.

Increasing egg supply: Follicle-stimulating hormone will be given after periods have stopped. This is an injection that may need to be taken continuously for 10 to 12 days. A large number of eggs can be fertilized with the help of this hormone.

The doctor will keep an eye: During this whole process, the doctor will keep a close watch on its progress. For this, the doctor can do a vaginal ultrasound and a blood test. The female will be given her last injection of hormones before taking eggs, after which 34 to 38 hours the eggs are ready for fertilization.

Egg removal: Eggs will then be ejected from the woman’s uterus. For this process, the woman is sedated and the eggs are taken out with the help of a needle. This process may take 15 to 20 minutes.

Fertilization process: After this, eggs and sperm are mixed in the laboratory for the process of fertilization. Then, after 16-20 hours, the fertilization process has been carried out. After the procedure is successful, the fertilized eggs are kept in the laboratory for five-six days before being placed in the womb, so that they can develop. Then one or two best embryos are selected for transfer.

Transfer process: Now a few days later the embryo is transferred to the womb. This is done with the help of a thin tube, called a catheter.

How long does IVF treatment last?

A cycle of IVF may take four to six weeks. At the same time, it may take half a day for the egg to be removed and fertilized. About two or three days later the woman will have to go to the hospital to have the embryo transferred or five to six days later for a blastocyst transfer (transferring the fertilized egg to the uterus).
