IUI vs IVF: Comparing the Differences, Success Rates, and Costs

In vitro fertilization (IVF) and Intrauterine insemination (IUI) are basically two medical techniques which come under assisted reproductive treatments and help someone get pregnant. So, let's find out what these terms actually mean, and what are the success rates and costs.

What Is (Intrauterine insemination) IUI?

IUI is a basic procedure which involves the placing of sperm inside a woman's uterus. It is also known as artificial is due to sperm fertilising the egg. It is required that sperm must swim from vagina, cervix and then reach the uterus. In this process, IUI plays a crucial role by decreasing the distance between sperm and egg which is required for fertilization.

IUI has 2 types in which one of them is Natural cycle IUI and the other is Stimulated cycle IUI. Natural cycle IUI means that sperm is placed in the uterus after the female body produces those hormones which induce ovulation.

Another is Stimulated cycle IUI in which fertility drugs are used to stimulate eggs and when ovulation in the female body occurs then sperm is placed in the uterus.

What Is The Procedure of IUI?

Artificial insemination under which IUI procedure is considered takes place on the day after ovulation. Remember, when a partner provides the sperm sample, he must do so on the day of IUI procedure only. Before this procedure, the healthcare provider washes the sperm sample because it separates seminal fluid from sperm and makes it more motile. Also, it causes less irritation to the uterus.

There are many common reasons for IUI procedures such as problems with sperm concentration or motility, shape, or size. The need for donor sperm arises when there are ejaculatory disorders, allergy to semen, nil sperm count etc.

Steps For IUI Procedure

Firstly, female lies on the examination table and places her feet in the stirrups then the healthcare person uses a speculum that helps to open the vagina and visualise the cervix. After this, the healthcare person inserts a long thin tube post the cervix and into the uterus. Then they inject the sperm into the uterus through the tube.

Lastly, female lie still for 15 to 30 minutes. After that, cleaning up and dressing of women is done by healthcare providers.

After this, the fertilized egg matures into an embryo then it is put back in the uterus to become a foetus. Common reasons for IVF are severe endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, elderly age group, Polycystic ovary syndrome, low AMH etc.

Types of In vitro fertilization

There are many types of In vitro fertilization procedures. One of them is Traditional/Conventional IVF in which thousands of sperm are put up in a petri dish with a mature egg and fertility drugs including injections and medications are given to the patient and all her eggs are targeted to increase in size so that better number of embryos are formed.

Another IVF is Natural IVF -

In this technique provider retrieves the eggs during ovulation and there is no need to take fertility drugs or injections.

There is another IVF known as Minimal stimulation IVF where low amounts of fertility drugs are given to women and only 2-3 eggs are targeted to increase in size. Conventional IVF is the preferred IVF for couples as it has better chances of success as compared to Minimal stimulation IVF. Another technique is In vitro maturation in which immature egg retrieval is done and eggs are matured in a petri dish with the help of ICSI, they are fertilized.
